Discipline System & Golden Kauri Awards
The classroom is a place of learning and all students have the right to an environment which will give them the greatest opportunity to gain a full and complete education.
With this in mind, a discipline system has been developed whereby any student who disrupts the class to a degree that inhibits the learning of the rest of the class will be removed.
This allows the teacher to carry on and teach. The chart of 'Steps for Discipline Referral' explains just what happens. It should be noted that all steps on this chart are recorded on a student's personal file held on the administration computer system.
The second area is the "Golden Kauri" Awards. This is a positive approach to discipline which encourages all students to work towards higher achievements and greater self esteem.
Each week every teacher has the opportunity to award six or more "Golden Kauri" certificates per class which go into a weekly draw at the Monday assembly. A reward is given to the student whose certificate is drawn out. This could be a McDonald's voucher, theatre tickets and once a term a stereo system. The "Top 40 Club" will be taken on a trip at the end of the year. This is sponsored by the PTCA.
Every student in the school can win. The "Golden Kauri Awards" chart explains the steps that follow the receipt of a certificate.
This system creates a win-win situation. The students win for their effort to improve and the school and community win by creating an ever-improving positive teaching environment. All awards are recorded against the student's name for future reference.
