Free Healthy Lunches

Menu for week of Monday 5 July -  Friday 9 July 2021

Otamatea High School is very excited to be part of Ka ora, Ka Ako - the Government's Free and Healthy Lunches Programme.

Each day, immediately after period 2, all students will be provided with a free and healthy lunch. Dietary requirements will be catered for. It will not be compulsory for students to eat the lunch provided and parents may, if they choose, continue to provide lunch for their child. The school cafe will remain open during both break times, and the canteen will also be open but only during the second break time.

A healthy school lunch is vital to the overall health and well-being of students. Three balanced meals a day is crucial to development in children. The foods that they eat provide nourishment for both physical and mental growth as well as improving their ability to focus, concentrate and learn.

When children don't eat a healthy lunch, it's harder for them to concentrate at school and to muster the energy for after school activities. They're also more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks later in the afternoon. By offering a healthy school lunch, your child will get the energy they need to power through the afternoon. A study published in 2008 in the "Journal of School Health" examined the eating habits of nearly 5,000 school children. Children who ate more fruits, vegetables and protein and fewer calories from fat, performed better on literacy tests compared to children with a high-fat, high-salt diet.

We are catering for students who are vegan, vegetarian, gluten intolerant or have food allergies.
