Follow your Passions

Along with academic learning, we provide classes in music, Maori culture and theatre skills. We also offer fine arts, graphic and digital design classes. Students can develop practical engineering capabilities or they can learn culinary expertise in our purpose-built classrooms.

We have a wonderful sports programme which offers all students the opportunity to enjoy surfing, stand up paddle boarding and swimming. Students also frequently enjoy many dynamic outdoor activities on their weekends at the many beautiful coastal locations nearby.

Our Home in Northland

Otamatea High School is situated in Maungaturoto, a charming rural township in the North Island. It is only 90 minutes from New Zealand’s main city, Auckland. Our community enjoys easy access to many nearby beaches, rivers, farms and other delightful townships. The region of Northland has a gentle climate with warm weather for most of the year.

Feel at Home in Our Community

We have warm and welcoming homestay families who can offer a real slice of life in New Zealand - many are teachers working here at our school. Living with our wonderful hosts is where many unique day trips and cultural experiences happen, and where warm-hearted memories are made. Some families live on small farms, others in the township and students may take a school bus or be driven by their host each day.

All our hosts are carefully vetted, checked and selected by our staff according to the 2016 Code of Practice requirements for International Students.

Study Requirements & Language Support

There are no specific academic requirements for enrolling, however an ability to study in English is required. We can offer support classes for developing language skills and subject tutoring in our dedicated ESOL class.

Term Dates & Holidays

The academic year runs from February to December and is divided into 4 terms of 10 weeks each. There are holiday breaks, with no classes for two weeks, between terms 1, 2 & 3.

The main Summer holiday starts at the end of Term 4 in early December, school resumes the following year at the beginning of February. We can provide a specialized end-of-year international student activity programme during the summer period if required.
