Level 2 Biology Waipu Rocky Shore study

By H. McIntosh

At the end of February, the level 2 biology students went to Waipu Cove for their zonation on a rocky shore study.

Belt transects were taken from extreme high water to extreme low water. Species were identified and populations estimated.

The data was used to look for patterns of distribution and link this to the adaptions and inter- relationships of the organisms found living there. Achievement standard 91158.

Just because it is an assessment doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. The weather was perfect the sea sparkled and no one fell in the water, even when trying to catch an octopus unfortunate enough to be stranded in a rock pool.

It was a great day.
