Students for the Day at NorthTec

By E. van den Berg

Self-driven Pathways students had the opportunity to attend a day at the Dyer Street campus of Northtec on the 31st of March. Schools across Northland could send 8 students each, so about a 100 or so students piled into a big shed to be welcomed. After the introductions student were divided into their chosen groups and went off with the tutors for the morning session. Students could choose from electrical, mechanical and automotive engineering, horticulture, agriculture and hospitality. Our students found themselves making sausage rolls and apple turnovers, building electrical circuits and making a small spade. The student who attended the horticulture workshop even brought a manuka tree sapling home.

They ate a lovely pizza lunch in their groups so that they had time for informal conversations with the tutors about career pathways in the various industries. After lunch they gathered again and were split up into their new groups for the afternoon workshops.

Students all agreed that it was a worthwhile day, whether they will end up studying at Northtec or not. There will be another opportunity in August for students to attend a similar day.
