From the Senior Leadership Team

Congratulations to our netball team for winning the Matoma cup against Rodney College. This is a fantastic result and reflects the hard work and talent in this team. Well done also to our girls basketball team who placed 3rd overall in the recent Northland tournament played in Whangarei. Our boys rugby team played Mount Richmond Special Needs school at the Maungaturoto Country Club on Friday afternoon and were a real credit to our school with the wonderful display of sportsmanship shown. Well done!

A huge effort by our chess players who participated in the Northland Regional Chess tournament last Friday saw some outstanding results. Matthew Lawrence-Goss placed 1st in the Intermediate division with his brother Caleb placing 2nd. Jackson Wintle placed 2nd in the Senior division and also received awards for the biggest upset and the biggest winning margin. Our intermediate team of Matthew, Caleb and Elliot Harltes also took out the top placing in the team event. Well done boys

Thank you to all the parents/caregivers and whānau who attended our parent teacher interviews on Wednesday afternoon. We had a very good turn out. This event gave teachers a chance to get to know their students' whānau a little better and to give them feedback on their child's progress in class. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive but there are many students, especially seniors, who have realised how much work they still need to complete before the end of the year. If you have any concerns about your child's progress, please contact the subject teacher directly, or if you want to know your child's overall progress, please get in touch with your child's whānau teacher. All our teachers' email addresses are on our website in the 'Our Staff' section.

Our PTCA (Parent Teacher and Citizen Association) is looking for new members. Our current members are leaving and we need a group of parents, teachers or members of our community to take over the fundraising initiatives that this group manages. Over the years the PTCA has raised money for DOE and netball trips, for library books and furniture, and much more.  Your commitment can be whatever you are comfortable giving so please contact the school if you would like to join, or if you wish to simply help out from time to time with fundraising events. If we do not get any new members coming forward then unfortunately the PTCA may no longer run.

Our goal is to have all students in the correct school uniform all the time.  The majority of students wear our uniform with pride.  However, we understand occasionally students may not have a full uniform. For students who may be in this situation we have a uniform exchange at school. The uniform exchange is located in the hall and is open between 8.30am and 9.00 am.  If a student is wearing incorrect uniform, they should bring a note from home explaining why and visit the uniform exchange before Whanau time in the morning where they can borrow correct uniform for the day.

Students exchange their non uniform item for uniform and at the end of the day return to the uniform exchange, return the borrowed item in exchange for their non uniform item.

On the 10th of August (our Open Day) there are no classes running for Year 10 students.  All year 10 students are to organise work experience on this day.  This is a fantastic opportunity for them to explore a possible career and find out what it entails to be an employee.  If it is easier for your family to organise a work experience day on the weekend instead, that is fine but Year 10 students are not to attend school on Thursday the 10th of August.

Year 7 Social Studies

This term, Year 7 students are starting the term learning about Early Polynesian and British settlers to New Zealand.

From learning about early navigation techniques, ancient Waka hauroa, to Captain Cook's voyages of exploration. Year 7's will be learning how early setters settled in New Zealand, carving the way for future generations. This is a wonderful way for students to learn about their tupuna and ancestors. Students will be showing their understanding by either creating posters, dioramas, models, booklets to reflect this unit of work.

If any whanau have any expertise or resources regarding topics please feel free to contact me.  Nyree Antunovich   nyree.antunovich@otamatea.school.nz

Work Experience Day Year 10 on 10 August
All Year 10 parents and students have been an email with the information about this day. Here is another video that discusses 5 benefits of Work shadowing and highlights the importance of the initiative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN9JQa1Trqs  It is hoped that students will have an insightful experience and be able to take some pictures to share with the community. As a school we are very appreciative of businesses who are opening their doors to our students.
