From the Senior Leadership Team

Congratulations to our senior students who participated in the annual Quad Exchange on Thursday, hosted by Dargaville High School. We have a very good relationship with Dargaville High School, Ruawai College and Rodney College and each school takes a turn hosting this event. Our students did extremely well and ended up overall winners! What a fantastic effort.  All teams played with pride and were excellent ambassadors for our school.

Netball - 1st place; Football - 1st place; Volleyball - 1st equal; Basketball - 2nd; Turbo Touch - 2nd; Chess - 2nd; WOD (200m swim/1km run/50 dead lifts/40 burpees) - 3rd

Open Day on Thursday the 10th August is fast approaching. This is a huge day on our school calendar with about 150 students plus teachers and caregivers from our feeder schools here for the day. We will welcome our guests with a powhiri in the morning, with a range of exciting activities planned for the rest of the day. Normal classes are running so our visitors will see Otamatea High School "in action".

Our roll continues to grow rapidly and we expect to have approximately 740 students at the start of next year.We have enrolment evenings scheduled for the 23rd August and the 6th September. We will have limited places available next year for out of zone students so please see our website for more details on our enrolment scheme.

The annual Year 10 Work Experience Day is on Thursday the 10th August. Instead of attending school, all year 10s will have a chance to experience a workplace for the day. It could be a family member, a local small business, or a large organisation. Parents/caregivers have received an email explaining the expectations for the day. Year 10s are currently completing a unit standard called “Obligations of an employee”, worth credits that will count towards NCEA. This will help them understand some of the expectations that employers may have of them. The work experience day gives students a real understanding of what a day at work involves, and helps them to start thinking about what they want to do one day. It will also help them decide which senior option subjects they should be taking next year.

Buses: A reminder that any route, timing, loading or driver queries or complaints need to be sent to our bus network manager through the easybus website (song.easybus.nz). Any complaints regarding student behaviour on the buses can be sent to huia.coll@otamatea.school.nz or adrian.cooling@otamatea.school.nz.

If you have any concerns or queries about your child’s learning you are advised to email their teachers directly. All our teachers' email addresses are on our website in the 'Our Staff' section.

From the English Department

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Education Perfect English Competition this week.

Students across the globe competed from the 1st-3rd August by completing English exercises that gave them one point for each correct answer.

Otamatea High School was placed 12th in New Zealand and 6th in our 501-1000 students category (size of school) - a result of which we should be very proud. Overall, our students completed 26,654 questions and gained 22,682 points - well done!

Special congratulations to the following students who received recognition certificates:

Callum Smith (y12) & Paige Berghan (y10) who both received Gold awards, placing them in the top 2% of all competitors.

Sophie Taylor-Rose (y7) and Joseph Stevens (y8) who both received Silver awards, placing them in the top 5% of all competitors.

Zoe Prinsloo (y8), Wairua Nathan (y10), Ava Jade Morrison (y8), Kacy Gillon (y9), & Lily Clare (y9) who received Bronze awards, placing them in the top 10% of all competitors.

And Nico Freeman (y7) & Matthew Laurence-Goss (y8) who received Credit awards, placing them in the top 20% of all competitors.

An awesome result for 2023 - what can we achieve in 2024?

"Visionaries Unleashed: Year 11 and Year 12 Students Shine with Their Remarkable Visual Texts"

In a display of talent and ingenuity, a group of exceptional Year 11 and Year 12 students have recently wowed audiences (Their teachers and, hopefully, you dear reader) with their outstanding visual texts, effectively communicating a diverse range of ideas. The modern world places immense value on the ability to convey information through engaging and captivating visuals, and these young minds have proven their mastery of this vital skill.

The students were tasked with communicating ideas through any visual medium. Some choose sculpture but the majority choose static images. The students' proficiency in using visual techniques to communicate complex concepts and evoke emotions is a testament to their dedication and hard work.

These budding visual communicators have undoubtedly honed a crucial skill for the modern era, one that empowers them to make a meaningful impact on society. As they continue to refine their craft, their contributions to the world of visual communication are sure to leave a lasting impression, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. Congratulations to these talented students on their outstanding achievements.
