Girls in Infrastructure trip
The event was opened by the Minister for Women Hon Jan Tinetti.  It exposed the girls to the wide spectrum of job opportunities in the infrastructure industry, covering all areas of engineering and machinery operations.  Students met with engineering representatives from Auckland and Canterbury universities, checked out plenty of heavy machinery, visited the Donovan Group factory, and a current bridge construction site.

Principal's News

25 Years: Rebecca Clist, our head of Arts and Languages, started teaching at Otamatea High School in term 2 1997. On Wednesday staff acknowledged and celebrated Rebecca's 25 years' service at our school with a surprise gift of flowers and a gold watch - recognising the huge impact Rebecca has had on our school over this time. We look forward to having Rebecca here for many more years to come.

Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews: Term 2 reports are being emailed to parents/caregivers today as pdf files. This is a change from previous years when they were sent as paper copies. Having read the reports myself, I am very pleased with the progress our students have made to date, particularly those who have had to catch up on missed work due to sickness. However, many students, particularly seniors, will need to put time aside these holidays to catch up on outstanding work. Please put Wednesday 3rd August into your diaries. We will be hosting our second parent teacher interviews at school this afternoon and I strongly encourage all parents/caregivers to attend.

School Ball: Our school ball is on Thursday the 21st July in the school hall. The ball committee has been very busy fundraising, and getting all the props, decorations and catering organised for the big night. This year's theme is 'Hollywood' and I am looking forward to seeing our students and staff dressed up in the evening. Doors will open at 7pm & close at 7.30pm for all students, and the ball finishes at 11.30 pm. If your child is attending the ball, please remind them of the high standard of behaviour and conduct expected of them at this formal occasion. It should be a wonderful night. A huge thank you to Ms Meachin for all her hard work!

Consumers and Producers: Our year 8s held their Consumers and Producers event in the hall on Tuesday and were lovely hosts to all the parents, family and whānau that attended. It was a fantastic highlight to the end of their social science unit where students have learned about products, marketing, and how producers and consumers exercise their rights and meet their responsibilities. This event keeps getting better each year.

End of Term Assembly: Term 2 ended with a final assembly in the gym. I spoke to students about the importance of catching up on missed work over the break. We then had our inter-iwi haka and waita competition. The performances were certainly a step up from previous years and the commitment from students and staff was amazing. Thank you to our judges Joseph Kapea and Kamira Nahona for judging the competition and congratulations to Ngapuhi for being crowned this year's winners. Also a massive thank you to 100% Fergus Appliances in Maungaturoto for sponsoring our end of term GK prize, won by Billie Le Mesurier-Cowbourne. We appreciate your ongoing support.

Board Elections: The triennial elections for school boards across New Zealand are coming up next term. For the Otamatea High School board of trustees, nominations for parent representatives open on Friday 29th July at 12pm, and close on Wednesday 17th August at 12pm. Voting then starts, and closes on Wednesday 21st September 2022. For more information about these important elections, please click on this link.

Open Day: Our annual Open Day is coming up quickly next term - the 11th August. We have started promoting this day to our feeder schools so please mark this date in your calendars if you have children intending on coming to Otamatea High School next year. Open Day is a fun, interactive day that showcases many of the exciting subjects that we offer here, and is very popular with our visiting primary school students.

Sports News

Collegiate Hockey  Otamatea played Maungakaramea A. A very tight game with Otamatea losing 1 - 0

Girls Football semi final vs Kerikeri High School. A thrilling, nail biting game with a nil all score at full time. The score remained even with the first 5 penalty kicks. Kerikeri took the win on the 'one for one' penalty kicks.

Boys basketball vs Bream Bay  The Otamatea boys travelled to Bream Bay to try and even the score from last week's game. Unfortunately it was not to be this time around. A great learning game for the boys to build from.

Netball Umpire Awards  Congratulations to Pyper Buxton and Stevie-Raye Rawaho-Ball for being awarded their Centre Badges at Netball last Saturday. It is wonderful to see these players stepping up and giving back to netball by umpiring each week.

WORK EXPERIENCE DAY 11 AUGUST 2022 FOLLOW-UP INFORMATION

Planning seems to be going very well for the Year 10 work experience day. Some students have filled in the Google form on this link, if it hasn’t been done, the holidays are the ideal time to get it sorted. The school would like to know by the first week of next term where students are going.

This 5 minute video details research done that shows the benefits of work experience for further studies, career choices and even part-time work that can come out of it.

Please get in contact with Elizabeth van den Berg elizabeth.vandenberg@otamatea.school.nz if you need any information resent or have any questions. We are very excited about this day and the opportunities students are being offered.

Board of Trustees Elections News

This year is the triennial elections of all school boards in NZ.

School boards play an important role in our school communities creating a better future for our children.  We encourage you to participate through nominating and voting for people who you believe subscribe to the values of our school.

KEY DATES:
Nominations close – Wednesday 3rd August 12pm
Voting closes – Wednesday 7th September 2022

The highest polling candidates will be elected to the board which will take office on Wednesday 14 September 2022

If you want to know more about the role and what it involves, there will be a webinar run by NZSTA (NZ School Trustees Association) for interested community members on 21st July 2022.  Find the registration link at www.schoolboardelections.org.nz

Should any Otamatea High School parent or community member wish to discuss any aspect or have any questions about being on the school Board, please email LLew Smart at llew.smart@otamatea.school.nz or Belinda Weber at belinda.weber@otamatea.school.nz

You are welcome to attend our next board meeting to see what it is all about – next meeting 2nd August 2022 6pm in the staff room.

TRIENNIAL  ELECTIONS  FOR  PARENT  REPRESENTATIVES

TO  OTAMATEA  HIGH  SCHOOL  BOARD  OF  TRUSTEES

During next term, nominations will be called for to fill five places on the Board for the next three years. Please consider if this is something you would like to be involved with or if you know of someone who would be suitable for one of these positions.

It is important to remember that nominees do not need to be a parent/caregiver of a student at the school, but they must be nominated by a parent/caregiver who is on the school roll. This is a good chance to involve someone from the community who you believe would have the skills to move the school forward in a positive manner.

Being on the BOT is very rewarding and a great chance for the members involved to see the school from a different perspective.
