Principal's News

Senior Study Skills Day: Well done to all our senior students who attended our study skills day on Monday. These students learnt about removing obstacles in order to achieve success, learning preferences, study methods, time management and organisational skills, and how the teenage brain works. With practice NCEA examinations starting on the 26th September, and with many students still a long way off from achieving the annual goals they have set for themselves, these study skills should prove invaluable in supporting them to achieve academic success.

Options Evening: Parents of students in years 10, 11 and 12 are invited to our Options Evening on Wednesday 7th September, in the hall. These students will soon be making their first round of option choices for 2023, and it is imperative that parents and whānau are involved in this process to ensure our students are making the right choices for their NCEA subjects next year.

Tournament Week: Congratulations to our mixed hockey team for their strong performances in the North Island mixed hockey tournament in Whangarei this week. Our team finished 7th with a 2-0 win against Te Kauwhata in their final game. Well done also to our girls netball team who competed in the UNISS tournament. Having won their pool they secured a spot in the top 16 of the C grade, and after some tough final games, ended 13th overall.

Enrolment Scheme: Otamatea High School's Enrolment Scheme for 2023 has now been confirmed. Students living in the home zone, and those who qualify through the grandparenting      provision, have automatic entitlement to enrol for 2023. All out-of-home zone applications must be received by the 7th September 2022. There will be out-of-home zone places available for students in year 7, 12 and 13. These numbers will be finalised after the 7th September.  Places in year 8, 9, 10 and 11 may become available in January 2023. Applications for these year levels will be placed on a waiting list. For further details please see our website or contact Nikki Donaldson on 0800 682 628 ext 213. Our next enrolment evening is on the 6th of September.

Policy Review: Each term a number of school policies come up for review, as part of our triennial review programme. If you wish to provide any recommendations on these policies, please click on this link, The username is Otamatea, and the password is bickerstaffe. We value your feedback.

Well done to all students who participated in the PISA assessments on Friday. These students were randomly selected, along with thousands of others from around the world, to complete these assessments - essentially representing New Zealand. PISA is the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment and it measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. Well done also to all our year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students who participated in the annual Mathex competition in Whangarei on Thursday. It was a very exciting and competitive afternoon. Finally, a massive congratulations to our students who received awards at the Central Northland Science Fair Awards Ceremony earlier this week. Maui Hawken took out the Baking Industry Research Trust Award with his project called “Wild Yeast”, and Harry Hoddle received two awards, a highly commended from the Fonterra Northland Operations and the overall Farmland Primary Industry Award, for his project application into the horticultural industry.

Ngā mihi
