From the Senior Leadership Team

Kia ora and greetings to you all
Ko Orkney Islander toku tangata
No Whakatane ahau
Ko Todd Malcolm toku ingoa

I am delighted, and feel extremely privileged, to join Otamatea High School as the new Tumuaki/Principal.

My education career has spanned a diverse range of educational settings and roles, I am deeply committed to fostering excellence and equity in education. As a curriculum leader, my passion lies in empowering teachers to inspire student success. My last 21 years have been spent at Takapuna Grammar school and Waiuku College in a variety of roles, including Deputy principal and Acting principal.

I am driven by principles of manaakitanga, ako and a positive attitude. I approach every endeavour with a genuine desire to make a difference. Whether leading a Kāhui Ako or coaching sports teams, my journey is marked by a dedication to nurturing both individuals and collective success.

I enjoy the outdoors, golf and fishing in my spare time.

I look forward to talking with you all and preparing our students for their next adventure.

William Pike

The William Pike students have been busy with their passion projects and community service throughout the school holidays and helping with fundraising for the group. Thank you to those who supplied food as well and coming along and supporting.
Students' passion projects range from learning a different language to cooking to knitting - all done in their own time and outside of school. In school, we can support students with a space to complete their passion projects, however most do this outside of school time.

For community service, some of our students have been teaching younger students at the Primary School to play netball, weeding the Waipu riverbank as well as beach clean-ups in Mangawhai and Waipu.
Here are some students getting out, and helping our community.

Gateway Work Experience

There are 58 students enrolled in our Gateway programme this year with around half having engaged in work experience to date. We are very appreciative of all the businesses who offer this opportunity to our students. Some of the new businesses we have on board include the Maungaturoto Rest Home, Mangawhai Physiotherapy, Kaiwaka Primary School, Mangawhai Panel & Paint, and Easy Access. Please support our fantastic local businesses wherever possible. If you would like to offer a work placement at your business please get in touch with our gateway coordinator via helen.anderson@otamatea.school.nz.

Inter-Iwi Haka Waiata competition

On the Last day of term 2 we held our annual inter-Iwi Haka Waiata competition.  This year the competition was close with all students performing at a very high standard with little separating first and second place however Arawa were victorious on the day taking out first place.  Whatua were a close second followed by Ngaphui in third and Maniapoto in Fourth.  I would also like to thank our special guest judges Phoebe Henderson and Katarina Maxwell for sharing their knowledge and expertise.

Bus drop off and pick up bay at school

Please follow the signs and use the drop off and pick up bay, when collecting students from school. Students must walk within the blue allocated spaces. Please move up as space allows.

Minecraft and Design Club

Every day at first interval students are able to use the two computer rooms. C2 is for Minecraft and is mostly frequented by year 7 to 9 students.
They share their worlds and the collaboration is both friendly and sometimes challenging each other to see who survives. The number of students in the
room varies but most days virtually all 30 computers are used.

Design Club happens in C3. This is a select group of students from Year 7 to 12 who works on their various computing skills. Some are drawing on Blender or preparing a design for the 3D-printer and
others are honing their programming skills. There are also some students working with BBC
microbits. Often the room is heaving with activity as students share their knowledge with others.

Wilderness magazine

The latest Wilderness magazine features a section on.... trail-blazing teens on the future of tramping. In this section, is an article about Sophie Lawson travelling to the opposite end of the country and tramping the Five Passes as a confidence booster and as a  2023 recipient of a Federated Mountain Club scholarship. It highlights Sophie's thoughts about tramping in the future and how important the Great Outdoors is to escape the stress of busy lives.
This is a lovely article to read and we are very proud of Sophie!
