From the Senior Leadership Team

We have a very successful Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) programme at Otamatea High School, with dozens of students involved in either the bronze, silver or gold award. This is very much due to the dedication of Robyn Bruce, our award leader, who not only manages the DOE Hillary award programmes, but participates in the adventurous journeys and helps the student with their fundraising efforts. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the DOE programme in New Zealand, and to celebrate the occasion, a special Award Celebration was held last Saturday at Government House in Wellington. The Duke of Edinburgh himself, HRH Prince Edward was in attendance, along with their Excellencies the Governor-General of New Zealand - The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro, and Dr Richard Davis. I was delighted to have received an invitation to see Robyn receive one of only six inaugral Excellence Service Awards, to recognise the outstanding work Robyn has done over the years. She has personally seen over 100 students achieve their gold award! Our little community in the Kaipara had a massive presence at this event, with Ken Hames, National Director for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award; Sharlene McCormick, DOE Board Member as well as DOE instructors Stephen and Andrea Orchard all present. I wish to publically congratulate Robyn on this amazing achievement. It was a very special ceremony and an amazing experience, especially getting to meet and talk to the Duke of Edinburgh himself.

We had a very productive staff only day today at school, with teachers working on the new NCEA level 1 standards that come out next year. For more information about the NCEA changes, please click here. We also welcomed our new HOD mathematics, Caitlin Clock, who starts with us next year. A group of our teachers also attended the Structured Literacy PLD at Maungaturoto Primary School - run by Liz Kane.
A reminder that our final staff only day for the year is on Monday the 4th December.

We are currently advertising for a new Te Reo Māori teacher, a new HOD for our Year 7 and 8 Syndicate, and a new Learning Support Manager. All are available in the Education Gazette. If you know of any teachers who may be interested in any of these positions, please encourage them apply, or to contact the school for more information. If you know of someone in the community that is not a trained teacher, but can confidently teach junior Te Reo Māori, please ask them to contact the principal directly at principal@otamatea.school.nz as I may be able to gain a Limited Authority to Teacher to enable them to teach next year.

A reminder that it is illegal to vape at school or on the school buses. We take a very strict approach to students who breach this law, which could result in stand-downs and suspensions for repeat offenders. Many vapes contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can harm brain development in teenagers, affecting memory, attention, and the ability to learn. Students who vape are putting themselves at risk of lifelong serious health issues, including the long-lasting effect of exposing their developing brains to nicotine. Please ensure that your child is not bringing vaping devices to school. For more information on vaping, please see this link.

All families who have children in years 10-13 in 2024 will have been sent a letter informing parents of our school expectation that students in those year groups bring a charged chromebook to school each day in a protective case.  There is also a form for parents to fill in.  Please fill in the form whether or not you can provide this essential piece of equipment in 2024.
We have special deals with PBtech who are our school supplier.  You can find more information about this on our school website:
https://www.otamatea.school.nz/our-school/student-chromebooks

If your child received a takoha chromebook this year, they are welcome to keep it, and use it for 2024.
If you have any questions regarding our BACTS scheme (Bring a Chromebook to school) please contact huia.coll@otamatea.school.nz

Most of students are wearing our school uniform with pride which is great to see.  However recently there have been a number of students wearing incorrect shorts and socks. The only shorts students should be wearing are the black Otamatea school shorts that have the school logo on them. Plain black cargo shorts or Dickies shorts are not acceptable. School socks must be plain black. Black socks with logos or any other kind of pattern or design are not school uniform. Students that are not wearing the correct uniform should have a note from home and visit the uniform exchange before whanau time in the morning to exchange the non-uniform item for uniform. At the end of the day students need to return to the uniform exchange to return the borrowed item.

Tauraroa Exchange

Friday 17 November saw Tauraroa Area School year 7 and 8 students visit Otamatea High School.

Rippa Rugby Team: fought hard against Tauraroa and ended up winning 16 to 4.  Massive thanks to Nathan Allen and Liam Asuncion who umpired the game, with great skill and professionalism.

Volleyball: the team played well together and represented OHS with pride. They were positive to each other and to Tauraroa. Some excellent serving from Tyler; at one stage the coach took him off the serve because Tauraroa could not return the ball. Final score was 25/13, 25/10, 25/15 to Otamatea.

Basketball: A closely fought game with a final score of 56-48 to Otamatea. A huge thanks to the students who ran this event - Oscar Longdon (coach), Miah Fraser and Jade Ferrari (referees), Dion Sheppard and Luka Fairburn (scoring officials).

Netball: It was an extremely hot day during the netball exchange. All teams played phenomenally well. Otamatea came out on top in all their games. Otamatea dug deep, had great sportsmanship which showed with their smiles and red faces. Well done to all that participated.

Hockey: Tauraroa showed their skills gained from attending AIMS games this year for hockey. With the Otamatea team only having had a few training's they played really well and we look forward to seeing them build as players next year. A huge thanks to Aimee Harrison for coaching the team on the day and Bruce Alison for umpiring.

Football: The game was played in good spirits with Otamatea gaining a substantial lead by half time. Tauraroa played a stronger game in the second half but were unable to compete with our team's greater fitness, enthusiasm and skills. Our highest scorer for the day being Leo Fenny and our strongest and most consistent defender being Elizabeth Bull.
Final score was Otamatea High School 13 goals to Tauraroa 5 goals.
A huge thank you for all the work that was put into make this event possible. Richard and Lij did multiple mowes then put in new field markings. The quality of the field was appreciated by players and coaches. Tina for your awesome organization both on the day as well as the weeks before, organising and encouraging the players to participate and Elizabeth Bull for providing the much appreciated juices at half time.

Fast 5 Netball Tournament Whangarei

The day started off a little overcast, all the students were ready to go. All games were played with sportsmanship and a whole lot of laughs as this was the first time for some of the junior teams. The day ended up being super hot. All the teams had a fantastic day.

Inspiring the Future

Seven role models from the community, one from as far as Kerikeri, met with our Year 8’s on Thursday 16 November for an Inspiring the Future event. The format was developed by the Tertiary Education Commission who is responsible for career education and guidance in New Zealand, since the former CareersNZ was de-established.
The role models came in casual clothes and students asked them Yes, No and Maybe questions until they could guess their careers. Rather quickly the students guess that Paul McCarroll was a farmer, Taniele Roux a chef and Ms Reynolds, an actor, apart from being a teacher. It took them a little longer to figure out that Gabriella Seager was a prop designer and Natalie Blandford a project manager in construction.
Then the role models went out and put on clothes or brought in props to reveal their occupations. This was when Denise Hopkins, a compliance officer from the Kaipara District Council and Ms Katrina Fleming’s former career in family and relations work explained what they did.
Students were then divided into groups to speak to the role models and ask them more questions. As part of the initiative there were some pre-event activities in class and at home as well as some post-event activities. Thank you letters, were written and sent to the role models.
Year 8 students will have the opportunity to choose some rotation subjects soon and it was a good time for them to start thinking about the directions they might be interested in. Thank you to parents who supported their children in the activities and are talking to them about their aspirations and subject choices. Any questions can be directed to me.

Year 10 Waitangi Trip

This week our Year 10 students have been undertaking day trips up to the Bay of Islands to explore Aotearoa New Zealand's history in more depth. Since studying the Treaty of Waitangi in Term 1, we've all been excited about the weather warming up so we can get the students out for a day of more hands-on learning. The first stop for any such trip must of course be the Treaty Grounds, where the friendly staff guided us through the site, including the Busby House, the Treaty Museum, the site of the signing, and the mighty waka Ngātokimatawhaorua. From here we took the ferry across to Kororāreka Russell, getting a closer look at Pompallier House and Christ Church, the burial place of notable figures such as Tamati Waka Nene and the first European born in this country. From there we caught the ferry to Paihia, where we boarded the bus to go to the magnificent pā site at Ruapekapeka, built by Kawiti to draw British forces away from key settlements in what became the last major battle of the Northern Wars. Many students reported that one of their favourite stops was the final stop in Whangārei, where students were able to purchase a well-deserved dinner of McDonalds, Pizza Hutt, Thai, or KFC. It has been wonderful for us to spend this time with our students learning about the history of our country, and we commend them on their great attitude and enthusiasm for getting stuck into the learning.

Syndicate News

This term the syndicate has been focussing on different cultures around the world. Students had to pick one culture and study its traditions, way of life, and compare it to other cultures.

Students are in the process of creating an artifact for their culture and choosing a traditional recipe from their chosen culture. Here are some pictures of one of the cultural shared meals. This ranged from a delicious Greek moussaka, Brigaderio ball from Brazil, Butter chicken from India, even a Loco Moco Hawian masterpiece- and many many more.
