From the Senior Leadership Team

All the best to our kapa haka roopu who are performing in the Otamatea Toi Māori festival here at school on Saturday. Our roopu are performing at 1pm. A massive thank you to our amazing kaiawhina Taira Phillips who puts in so much work planning this event. It has grown in popularity so much over the past three years. We will have food stalls, raffles, coffee and more on site tomorrow, with a full programme of kapa haka performances on stage in the hall. Please come and support this wonderful celebration at our school.

Congratulations to Aaron Harrison who has made the NZ Junior Macintosh Skeet Team. Aaron had a great week shooting in Christchurch recently and has also made the North Island Junior Team. Well done Aaron.

Today a bus full of junior students head to Rainbows End for the annual Golden Kauri (GK) reward trip. This trip rewards those students who have earned the most GKs in their respective classes over the course of the year, and promises to be a really fun day.

Our term 4 policies are up for review and can be accessed on SchoolDocs via our website. They are Curriculum and Student Achievement, Student Achievement Information/Student Assessment and Achievement, Home Learning, Distance Learning, Religious Instruction/Religious Education and Health Education. Your feedback is welcome.

All year 8 and 9 students will be bringing their 2024 year 9 and 10 option forms home with them today. Please complete these with your child and ensure they are returned to school no later than Friday 8th December.

A reminder that we have our last staff only day of the year on Monday 4th December. Teachers will be finalising their planning and course design for the new NCEA standards that are being introduced next year.

A reminder that it is illegal to vape at school or on the school buses. We take a very strict approach to students who breach this law, which could result in stand-downs, or suspensions for repeat offenders. Many vapes contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can harm brain development in teenagers, affecting memory, attention, and the ability to learn. Students who vape are putting themselves at risk of lifelong serious health issues, including the long-lasting effect of exposing their developing brains to nicotine. Please ensure that your child is not bringing vaping devices to school. For more information on vaping, please see this link.

During the final three days of school this term we have camps and activities. Whilst participating in these activities is not compulsory it's an amazing opportunity  for students and we encourage everyone to get involved. Students not participating are still required to attend school and an alternative program of learning focused on literacy and numeracy will be running.   To be able to attend the planned camps and activities students must have completed and returned a permission slip and made payment of  the following costs.

Year 7 $91
Year 8 $100
Year 9 $30
Year10 $100

Payment can be made by cash, eftpos, direct credit.

Year 10 Drama Performance

Year 10 drama performance of Sticks and Stones directed by Kylie Reynolds took place on 22nd November. Year 10 drama students performed to an enthusiastic class of year 7 students in the drama room. The students in the cast were: Wairua Nathan, Paige Berghan, Madi Radd, Louise Vernall, Denika Clooney, Hannah Long and Savannah McLeod. The back stage crew were Zuri Kimani, John Jansen and Daniel Ford. Sticks and Stones is about a group of teenagers and the many challenges that they face navigating the ever changing world around them. The play challenges the notion that we fall into peer pressure and temptation from the world around us. Self-image, bullying, fitting in and pushing the boundaries of expectations from society shape us into the people that we become in the future. Do we always think before we speak? Is it ok to share information about other people without their permission? Sticks and Stones might break my bones, but words can hurt you. The year 7 students were a respectful, supportive and engaged audience. Year 10 students involved should be proud of themselves for creating an educational, reflective piece of theatre for young people at Otamatea High School.

Year 10 Spanish Cultural food trip

On Thursday, the Year 10 Spanish class travelled to Ponsonby, Auckland to eat at the Latin restaurant “Olas arepas” where students got to try some delicious Colombian and Venezuelan food. Students got to enjoy different kinds of “arepas”, a traditional food made with cornmeal flour stuffed with a filling of your choice such as beef, chicken, pork, cheese, veggies, among others.

Students also had the chance to practice their Spanish as they ordered their food using the language. This is a huge accomplishment for them as it is not easy to put yourself out there and speak in a foreign language that you are currently in the process of learning. They should be very proud of themselves!

It was a lovely day for all of them and everyone ended up with a happy full belly!
