Kia mataara ki te ao – Ready for the World
Kia ora koutou, parents, whānau, and school community.
As we conclude Term 3, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been an exceptionally busy, productive term across Otamatea High School. Our students and staff have worked tirelessly and represented our school with immense pride across academic pursuits, sports, cultural events, and community initiatives.
Academic focus remained strong throughout the term. Congratulations to our students for their diligence during the CAA exams in Week 8 and the Senior Exams in Week 10. These assessments provide essential preparation for the final NCEA examinations coming up next term.
We have had so much to celebrate on the sports field and in our cultural activities. A major highlight was the annual Reporoa Exchange, where we enjoyed three wonderful days of competition and successfully retained the trophy. Our netball team represented us with pride at the Upper North Island Secondary Schools (UNISS) tournament, finishing a fantastic 13th in the B Grade (above many schools that are 4 times the size of Otamatea), A student representative competed in golf at the AIMS Games, and three students took part in the hockey tournament. Additionally, having the Ranfurly Shield at our school was an exciting and memorable occasion for our students and the primary students that came down for the visit.
A massive congratulations to Denika Clooney, who recently represented New Zealand as part of the 28-strong NZSSAA team at the 2026 Australian Athletics Cross Country Championships in Ballarat, Melbourne! Denika put on an absolute masterclass across two grueling days of racing against tough competition. Battling through an extraordinarily muddy and challenging course against 50 runners, Denika claimed 3rd place overall with an impressive time of 24:47 in the U20 women’s 6km individual race.
On Sunday, Denika teamed up with her NZ squad for the U20 Mixed Relay, delivering a phenomenal performance to take 1st place and bring home the GOLD! What an incredible effort. We are super proud of your dedication and performance Denika!
Our school calendar was packed with vibrant events including the Option Afternoon, Year 10 Market Day and an outstanding evening of music- Olla Podriga. A massive thank you to our kaiako, Adam Blake, for organising this event. Thank you to everyone who supported our Daffodil Day fundraiser for the Cancer Society. We were also proud to host the Quint meeting, bringing together local principals and head students to foster regional leadership and collaboration. On the staff front, our team competed with great enthusiasm in "Steptember," a staff step-count trophy will be presented in term 4
We continue to make steady progress on developing our updated Shared Vision for Otamatea High School. The Vision steering group has been assembled and is currently analysing staff feedback to refine our core themes and values. We look forward to canvassing parents and caregivers early in Term 4, and organising opportunities for Whānau Hui. I will be bringing these ideas and spending time discussing them with our Board of Trustees at our upcoming meetings. Board documents and reports this term also included reviewing our SONG bus network risk register.
Looking ahead to Term 4, please mark these key dates in your calendar:
Thursday, 22nd October: Cyber Safety Event (Kaiwaka) 6.30pm in Kaiwaka War Memorial hall
Friday, 23rd – Tuesday, 27th October: Principal attending International Principals Conference in Shanghai

I want to reinforce and be very clear that Racism has absolutely no place in schools or communities; it harms individuals, breaks down trust, and undermines human dignity. By actively standing against discrimination and valuing cultural diversity, students help build an empathetic community rooted in fairness, equality, and mutual respect. Schools are about belonging first and foremost, and for people to belong and succeed, they need to feel culturally and emotionally safe. Be the change that you want to see in the world.
Remember that our community cyber safety event (18+) is booked for Thursday 22nd October 6.30pm, at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall. Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngaringaomatariki and Wellsford Primary Schools, alongside us, are bringing Rob Cope's Parent Cyber Safety Programme to our community. Rob is one of New Zealand's leading parent educators in online safety, dedicated to keeping our tamariki safer in our digital world. Rob's programme is designed to help schools create a shift in parent awareness, boundaries, and an online safety culture within the home and across our local schools. Please buy tickets through Kaiwaka primary school. An event you certainly will not want to miss! Tickets are $15 and available to purchase via the link here.
Please take a few moments to complete our Social media/ digital use Google Form. Your feedback helps us better understand the key digital issues facing our community and guides our response in this rapidly evolving area.

On behalf of NZPF I have accepted an Invitation for one Principal from New Zealand to participate in the 3rd International Seminar for School Leaders in Shanghai Normal University around STEM in schools and will be presenting at this conference. This is a great opportunity to see what other schools around the world are doing with their STEM programs. The 4 day trip is fully funded by the Chinese government and I will also be taking the opportunity to do some international student marketing while in Shanghai.
Thank you all for your continued support of our school community, staff, and students throughout this Term. Enjoy a safe and restful break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed for Term 4 ready to learn.
Ngā mihi nui,
Todd Malcolm

The Level 2 Primary Industries class completed day one of a two day fencing assessment course run by Land Based Training and the Whangarei A&P Society . The course was held at the property of Marty Roost on Oneriri Road, Kaiwaka. The two days were held over the space of several weeks and in between students did a significant amount of practice of the fencing skills that they learned on day one. As well as gaining valuable skills and experience in fencing, students were also able to gain 13 practical and theory credits for their Level 2 NCEA. Many thanks to Marty Roost for allowing this kaupapa on his property.

This year’s Primary Industries class recently headed north to Kerikeri for an action-packed, hands-on learning experience across the region's thriving agricultural and horticultural sectors.
The educational road trip kicked off with an eye-opening visit to a bustling kiwifruit orchard and packhouse, where students got a firsthand look at the rigorous quality control and technology required to get New Zealand fruit ready for the global market. Next, the group toured a diverse avocado and blueberry orchard, learning about the unique growing conditions and sustainable practices used to cultivate these popular crops. To round out the agricultural experience, a visit to a local dairy farm gave students invaluable insights into the behind the scenes of a dairy farm, and the daily operations of a busy dairy shed, as well as the opportunity to milk cows in a rotary cow shed and play with calves.
After long days of exploring and learning, the class wound down at the Bay of Islands Holiday Park, staying in the cabins. The accommodation provided a fantastic base for the team.
Of course, a road trip isn't complete without memorable travel moments. Travelling up in vans meant plenty of laughs, high energy, and classic road trip antics—including some lively food-sharing and back-seat chaos, courtesy of Elliot.
Overall, the trip was a massive success, bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world industry practice. Huge thanks to all the local businesses who hosted our students!

13 Level 2 Primary Industries students completed the assessment day of a three day course run by the Northland Regional Council for Pest Control.
Over the three days (which were spread over a period of 6 weeks), and many days back at OHS, students learned how to set and maintain traps, pluck and skin possums, health and safety associated with pest control and the theory behind all of these practices.
The course was held at Kai Iwi lakes and after completing the course the students gained a number of Level 2 and 3 credits

Our Environmental Committee joined other Enviro Schools at the Dargaville Museum for an inspiring, hands-on day of learning and connection. Students crafted their own bamboo flutes while discovering traditional taonga puoro, and put ringa manaaki—hands of service—into action by helping lay a delicious hāngī. The group also developed focus and coordination through rākau practice, and rounded out the day with a lesson in sustainability by helping fix up historical machinery. It was a fantastic experience showcasing kaitiakitanga, teamwork, and practical sustainability in action!

Our Year 12 Sports Leadership class recently enjoyed an action-packed three-day outdoor education camp at Elliott Bay. Despite a mixed bag of weather, conditions remained great overall. Students made the most of the coastline—exploring the new ridge track and coastal trail by day and relaxing around beachfront campfires by night. Beyond the fun, the trip served a key academic purpose: students were assessed on risk management and preparation for overnight camping. Ka rawe, Year 12!
