Farewell: Today we say goodbye to Sandra Sears, our head cleaner, who is retiring after 16 years at Otamatea High School. All the best Sandra! You have been a kind, supportive and hard working member of our team, and you will be missed.
Parent Teacher Interviews: Please put Wednesday 3rd August into your diaries. We will be hosting our second parent teacher interviews at school this afternoon and strongly encourage all parents/caregivers to attend.
Band Visit: On Thursday, Tauraroa Area School brought their junior and senior jazz bands to our school for performances in the hall. All year 7 and 8 students as well as all Y9-13 music students were in attendance. The performances were incredible and our students were very appreciative of the visitors musical talents, with many now wanting to know when we will start our own school band. Watch this space!
School Social: Last night's social was a great success. Over 150 students enjoyed the music and dancing in the school hall, and I was very impressed with how they behaved themselves. It was really lovely seeing everyone enjoying themselves. The hotdogs, hot chips and drinks were very popular and everyone seemed to have a great time with all funds raised going to our kapa haka group.
Poetry Cafe: Our year 7s were wonderful hosts on Monday as we held our annual Poetry Cafe in A-block. Parents, caregivers and whānau who attended were well looked after, with plenty to eat and drink. Well done to all students who were brave enough to recite their poems in front of everyone. There were some delightful poems and I was very pleased to see so much talent on display.
Attendance: Our attendance rates continue to rise, with average attendance last week at 88%. However, the flu and COVID are still in our communities so please continue to keep your child at home if they are sick. If your child develops flu/COVID symptoms during the school day, we will contact parents/caregivers to please collect them from school. Students and staff are encouraged to continue wearing masks when at school. Remember all students 12 years and over need to continue wearing masks when travelling on the school buses.
Open Day: Our annual Open Day is coming up quickly next term - the 11th August. We have started promoting this day to our feeder schools so please mark this date in your calendars if you have children intending on coming to Otamatea High School next year. Open Day is a fun, interactive day that showcases many of the exciting subjects that we offer here, and is very popular with our visiting primary school students.

WORK EXPERIENCE DAY 11 AUGUST 2022On the 11th of August all Year 10’s go out on a work experience day organised by parents. In the careers programme students have been exploring the challenges in the world they would like to tackle one day. This day is an excellent opportunity for students to get to know people who work in the fields they are interested in, see what they do from day to day and ask them about the training they did for the work they do. Please watch this video about work shadowing. It clearly explains seven steps to take, from deciding who to approach, how to behave and what to do afterwards. If you could start talking to your child about what the possibilities are that you can manage, it would be great. On Tuesday all Year 10 students and parents will receive a letter explaining the details for our day. We are building on the success of the first Work Experience Day last year. We could see a difference in students’ attitudes to learning afterwards and in the uptake of Gateway opportunities by year 11 students this year. Please get in contact with Elizabeth van den Berg elizabeth.vandenberg@otamatea.school.nz if you have any questions. We are very excited about the day and hope you will see the benefits of your efforts. |
