The Otamatea High School Ball took place on the last Friday of the school holidays. Students, staff and parents decorated the hall in a 'Shanghai Bloom' theme. The hall was ready and on the night students arrived, some in vintage cars and others with the local fire brigade. The night was managed by Mr Damon George who seemed to be everywhere and made sure the students had a great evening. Mr Bruce Ferguson came to his last ball as head of security as his children are now moving on to other pathways. The awards on the night went to:

The new team has started and this week the senior students were involved in the sports Quad Challenge at Ruawai College. Sports played were volleyball (placed 2nd) Netball (1st) Football (3rd) and Touch (2nd) making Otamatea High School runners up in the competition. The competition was played in great spirit and I would like to thank Ruawai College for the event and look forward to Otamatea hosting it in 2022. We now look forward to the Reporoa Senior Sports Exchange on 15th -17th August.
Term 3 will be an extremely busy term for all students. Next week the Year 7 & 8 Science Fair will be taking place. This year the displays will be on show at the Maungaturoto Country Club. We are very grateful for the club's support in providing a venue for this science fair. Parents will be able to view the student displays on Thursday from 5pm till club closing and on Friday from 12noon through to 6pm.
Maia Fairburn: There is no higher sporting honour than representing your country, and to that end we have received some exciting news. Maia Fairburn has been selected for the NZ U16 Girls (Black) Tag Football Team for the upcoming Trans Tasman Test series. The series will be held at Bruce Pullman park, Auckland on the 17th-19th of September. This is an amazing achievement and acknowledgement of the talent and hard work Maia puts into her sport. We wish her every success.

Our Head Girl, Renee Allen, was selected to play in the Whangarei under 18 rep team. This team travelled to Rotorua to participate in the New Zealand Under 18 Championship Tournament. The team placed 21st out of 36 teams. Renee will be playing with the rep team in future one day events over the next couple of months. Congratulations also to Gareth Ferguson who placed 11th in New Zealand Gymnastics in Level 7 floor apparatus Mens Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) at Nationals on Friday. Gareth's Coach, Gail Townsend, said Gareth competed with a splendid floor routine scoring 12.766 and just missed the finals against tough competition. He competed as part of the Northland representative team, at the New Zealand Gymnastic Championships at The Trusts Arena, Henderson, Auckland on 23 July.
I would also like to acknowledge the commitment the families of these students make, so they are able to achieve at this level. Well done to Maia, Renee and Gareth we are very proud of you.
A reminder the school will be closed for instruction on Tuesday 3rd August (next week) when staff will be taking part in a Ministry of Education Professional Development day.
We look forward to an excellent term ahead with plenty happening both inside and outside of the the classroom.

Open Day is a wonderful opportunity to see the school in action. All prospective students for 2022 are most welcome to attend, although the main focus of the day will be on providing interactive experiences for current year 6 and year 8 students. Open Day creates a real buzz and students leave full of excitement for the coming year.
Students from Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka and Paparoa primary schools do not need to register, but those from Mangawhai Beach School and Waipu Primary School, as well as those from further afield, are asked to please register their attendance on the school’s webpage. Register here
Two weeks to go till the Work Experience Day. I keep hearing about amazing opportunities. Some students are going up the road to a local business or workplace and others are going out for the day to Auckland or Whangarei.
Here is the link to the form where you or your child needs to record where they are going and what career it relates to. The link has been fixed so that the form accepts submissions from emails outside of the Otamatea domain. This means that you should be able to open it and fill in the required information.
This week’s video gives a great overview of the process of job shadowing with several points to consider. The video was made by an overseas university but the principles are the same and it is only 2.20 minutes long. Please get in contact with Elizabeth van den Berg elizabeth.vandenberg@otamatea.school.nz if you need any information resent, or have any questions.
Otamatea High School wishes to hear from suitably qualified and registered teachers who wish to be considered for day relief. Please send your CV to:
Deborah Cornhill-Davies, Relief Co-ordinator e mail: deborah.cornhill@otamatea.school.nz
Students are encouraged to go to D3 during interval (first break) on Mondays and Thursdays. Please come prepared with any problems and questions that you have. We are here to help!
Maungaturoto Pet Day 2021 will be held in term 4, 22 October For those interested in rearing a calf for Pet Day, Anne Shanks has kindly donated a collection of covers and halters. They are all second hand, but she would very much like to see them put to use. If you are interested in taking a look, please contact Terri 021 02220218. Remember Pet Day entries close on the last day of term 3 (1 October) as there is a fair amount of admin done over the holidays.
